This aerophones and dynamics study (Elements #4) was conceptualized over several years and originated as a vocal piece where audience members would choose a tone and sing it, building a mass of sound as was heard by Rendina at a Meredith Monk workshop when he was still a teenager. He later favored the idea of using glass bottles filled with water, dividing the bottles into equal proportions as the number of bottles increased from one to twelve, creating an alchemical process. The resulting sound after all twelve bottles are used is not equal temperament, as one may suspect. Each of the songs includes an additional wind instrument, most of which are indigenous instruments from the Americas, and explore the resonances of overblowing the bottles. The first piece demonstrates that it takes twice as much air to produce an octave, as the tones that are twice as high are half as long. Rendina also incorporates breathing techniques from Yoga. The piece may be performed in the water after sundown.
