Constellations contains 88 short improvised pieces for piano and is the culmination of the development of a music system that combines the Carnatic music of Southern India with Western music and harmony. Each piece has a bass ostinato, two improvised parts, a strummed part using the sostinuto pedal, and harmonics played by hand. The piece unveils the mystical numerology present in music, with seven notes in each raga and their related modes (days of the week), the twelve pitches (zodiac signs) that would result from the cycle of fifths and yield the 24 major and minor keys (hours), instead utilizing one of two alternate tuning systems where twelve of the 22 shrutis (major arcana) or increments are used, and including the 28 modes (lunar month) with seven notes that can be harmonized with thirds on each step with a note between, related to major, melodic minor, harmonic minor, and harmonic major, with 60 remaining ragas and scales (minutes); the three scales with six notes as two augmented triads juxtaposed (666), the two scales with eight notes as two diminished sevenths juxtaposed to complete the system for a total of 33 (the master healing number) that can be harmonized and 88 (often misinterpreted but associated with good fortune) when including the remaining 55 ragas that cannot be harmonized of the 72 in the Melakarta system. Not surprisingly there are 36 Northern Constellations according to the International Astronomical Union, and 52 Southern Constellations, corresponding to half the ragas and the number of black keys on most pianos, and the remaining ragas and scales that can be harmonized and the number of white keys on a piano respectively.
